“Tariffs are good, very very good. I like them, I really, really like them. And let me tell you, I am going to make America great again. So great that you can’t imagine it”
If you read that in Trump’s voice, I am very very sure you know the love affair Trump has on tariffs.
It wasn’t that long ago when we saw a trade war happen in 2018 with China. Investors were jittery as they feared that trade between the two countries could dry up.
If you don’t know what is a tariff, it is a tax on products imported from other countries. And it is bad news for trade around the world.
But recently, he has softened his stance slightly by suspending tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada for one month while the countries negotiate with each other.
Well, to be precise, Trump loves low-balling people. He isn’t shy about this fact in his business books (that he self-publishes, ahem).
However, these tariffs could have bad implications for both countries based on their top exports to the U.S.
Canada to U.S.: Crude petroleum. petroleum gas, cars, and motor parts.
Mexico to U.S.: Computers, cars, and motor parts.
One, the U.S. auto industry could face higher motor vehicle and parts prices. Two, the U.S. could see higher petroleum and natural gas prices which could raise inflation.
However, the auto and oil & gas industries in Canada and Mexico could have more to lose considering that these exports contribute quite a big portion to their local economy.
Better hope then, that negotiations go well between them.
Tool of the Week
Want to know how AI could help you in your investment research?
Have no fear for I have created a Chatgpt prompt below that you can just insert:
Act like a seasoned portfolio manager and produce a comprehensive investment thesis for [Company Name or Ticker]. Your analysis should meet the standards of a veteran investment team and include the following sections:
Executive Summary: Outline the overall investment case, current valuation, and your final recommendation (buy, hold, or sell).
Business Analysis: Provide a detailed review of the company’s business segments, explaining how each segment drives revenue and profitability. Discuss the company’s economic moat and pricing power.
Financial Analysis: Present a deep dive into historical and forecasted financial metrics (such as revenue, EPS, margins, cash flows, and capital structure). Evaluate key valuation multiples (for example, P/E, EV/EBITDA, P/FCF) and explain any notable trends.
Competitive and Industry Landscape: Assess the competitive positioning of the company and analyze relevant industry trends that may impact its performance.
Catalysts and Risks: Identify the major catalysts that could drive the stock’s performance and outline potential risks, including competitive pressures, regulatory challenges, and other sector-specific issues.
Valuation and Recommendation: Conclude with a final valuation section that integrates your analysis and provides a clear investment recommendation, supported by data and insights.
The final output should be structured like a professional analyst report, with clear sections and detailed, actionable insights.
Hope the above can save you more than 50% time spent on stock analysis in future!
Cheers,
