Trump taxing the Penguins?

Sounds like a bad Happy Feet reboot movie

Imagine Trump walks like a penguin.

Maybe not…

But he did definitely walk the talk about tariffs.

He just dropped the world a bomb by imposing at least 10% tariffs (even on Antarctica where Penguins live -.-).

Meanwhile, the ‘Dirty 15’ countries have been imposed with more.

In Meme of the Week section, I go deeper into this and examine whether it will lead to a recession.

Meme of the Week 📹

Heard and McDonald Islands - the two places with nothing but penguins and seals were the subject of Trump’s tariffs.

Looks like someone in the office was dozing off when they did the tariffs. But it is not surprising given that its equation to impose tariffs was this one.

It might look complicated but it literally means that the U.S. took trade deficit and divide it by imports.

On a more serious note though, Trump tariffs are going to have big impacts on the stock markets around the world. We have already seen the impact

  • S&P 500: -4.8%

  • Euro Stoxx 50: -4.1%

  • Nikkei 225: -2.8%

  • Hang Seng: -1.5%

And the impact will mainly come from imports being more expensive for Americans. You see, the U.S. relies a lot on its consumers buying stuff.

With prices now projected to rise sharply, many are worried that spending will collapse for the year and bring the economy into a recession.

Just when the U.S. thought the inflation scare was over. Here comes another one.

Free Tool of the Week

While the tariffs are bad, it does present an opportunity to buy in to some stocks that have gone down recently.

And there are two criteria that I use - market capitalisation and relative strength index. Companies that are large in size are good. Meanwhile, relative strength index that is below 30 means that it is currently at an oversold position.

I find myself using the stock screener of ShareInvestor to do this. I filtered for the criteria of

  • Market Cap that exceeds US$10 billion

  • Relative Strength Index that is below 30 (oversold position)
